Each thing in nature—each bird, tree, and flower— is, as it were, a question containing its own potential answer, meaning and explanation. All phenomena— light, color, sound—aand all natural processes—germination, growth, digestion, fermentation—contain the power to evoke, in the prepared observer, if he does not shoot them down, the true response that is their meaning.
