Discussion Questions
1. The story begins within one of Miranda's
dream sessions. How do we know it is not the "real" world of the story?
2. The framework of the story allows a great
many sentences that would be meaningless in a realistic narrative. How
do we make sense of a sentence like "Daniel was twenty again" and what
do such sentences do to our interpretation of the more conventional assertions
around them?
3. What does Daniel know of the present
situation and what sorts of things does he seem unaware of?
4. Is Dr. Matsui right when she says that
there is, "Apart from you, no Daniel"? Does her statement mean more than
she intends it to?
5. This story, published in 1985, alternates
between a remembered 1970 and an imagined 2000. How does each of those
three time frames alter our perspective on the other two? |
