Ursula K. Le Guin, born in Berkeley in 1929, lives in Portland, Oregon, and has published four books of poetry, two of essays and criticism, and many novels and short stories in a variety of genres including realism, fantasy, science fiction, and children's books. The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), the four Earthsea books (1968-90), and Always Coming Home (1985) are among the best known. She has many awards, the most recent the Oregon Institute of Literary Arts' H. L. Davis Prize for Searoad (1991). Has cat.
