Fargo, North Dakota (Fargo) – The movie Fargo by the Coen Brothers does not fully take place in the city of Fargo. The movie is partly set in Fargo, ND, Brainerd, Minnesota, and the Twin Cities, namely Minneapolis. None of the scenes, both interior and exterior, were actually filmed in Fargo. The majority of the scenes were shot in Minnesota or North Dakota. The city of Fargo plays a small role in the film, serving as the setting of the opening scene. The opening scene however was not actually shot in Fargo, but rather it was shot in Minneapolis. During the opening scene, at the bar in Fargo, ND, Jerry Lundegaard meets the criminals Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud to discusses the plan to kidnap Jerry’s wife. It is in the setting of Fargo where the plan is set and the story begins. No other scene takes place in Fargo after the opening. It is interesting why the Coens chose to title their film after the city when it has such a small part in the story. The Coens later said that they named the film Fargo because it sounded more interesting than Brainerd, where a majority of the movie takes place.
