Capitol Pictures is the fictional film studio in the Coen Brothers’ movie Barton Fink. Barton comes to work for Capitol Pictures after the success of his play, “Bare Ruined Choirs,” when his agent informs him that Capitol Pictures wants him to write movie scripts for the salary of one thousand dollars per week. He is immediately put to work for Capitol on a script for a wrestling picture. Most of the movie’s action takes place as Barton struggles with writer’s block while in his room at the hotel Earle attempting to complete the script for Capitol Pictures. Capitol Pictures is run by Jack Lipnick, an amalgamation of Louis B. Mayer (boss of MGM) and other powerful men of film industry’s past. Capitol Pictures also employs a number of Barton Fink’s other main characters including: W.P. Mayhew, Audrey Taylor, Ben Geisler, and Lou Breeze.
