Proudfoot, Shep (Fargo). A mechanic of few words who works for Jerry Lundegaard at the dealership. Shep puts Jerry into contact with kidnapper, Gaear Grimsrud. He vouches for Grimsrud, not for “his buddy” Carl Showalter, who ends up botching the job by forgetting to put tags on the stolen car forcing Grimsrud to shoot the cop who pulls them over.

Shep is then questioned about the murder by Marge Gunderson who reminds him he is on parole for narcotics and “other entanglements” and that he wouldn’t want to add being an accessory to murder to that list.

Next, Shep tracks down Carl and, deciding against Carl’s suggestion to “smoke a fucking peace pipe,” beats him with a belt for bringing on so much heat and, leaving us with the deep and poignant lines: “You fucking motherfucking son of a bitch! You fucking cock! Jesus Christ! Fucking shitbag motherfucker!” is never seen again.

The actor playing Shep Proudfoot, Steve Reevis, received an award from First Americans In Fine Arts for this role in 1996.—Aron Dailey
