Brewster, "Big Dave" (The Man Who Wasn’t There). The loud,
obnoxious boss at Nirdlinger’s, the
local department store in Santa Rosa California in 1949. Big Dave constantly
brags about his time spent in combat in the Pacific Theatre during World War
II. He claims to have served as a crack infantry trooper.
Big Dave employs alcoholic Doris
Crane as his bookkeeper. Doris’ husband, barber Ed Crane suspects that Doris
and Big Dave are having an affair. Ed anonymously blackmails Big Dave into
giving him $10,000 for an investment.
Big Dave is married to Ann Nirdlinger, whose family owns the
Nirdlinger’s department store. Big
Dave was planning on starting his own business, but is immediately set back
after the blackmail. He confides in Ed, not suspecting him at all to be the
blackmailer. Big Dave also confides in Ed about his affair, although Big Dave
doesn't say who he had the affair with. He also tells Ed that he suspects
Tolliver to be the blackmailer, because Tolliver visited him before Ed and the
start-up money and the blackmail money was the same amount.
Finally, Big Dave pays the $10,000. Ed receives the money
and then immediately visits Tolliver, and gives him the money. Ed out of the anger
of Big Dave’s affair stabs him in the side of the throat killing him. Doris is
arrested for Big Dave’s murder.
