Deputy Wendell. Deputy Wendell is a minor character in the Coen BrothersÕ Best Picture winning film, No Country for Old Men. Wendell is played by Garret Dillahunt and is primarily used as the comic relief in the film.  He plays the inexperienced deputy sheriff and assists Tommy Lee JonesÕ character, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, in the investigation that is the case in the film. Wendell makes his first appearance when he informs Sherriff Bell of a car fire. When investigating the fire, one of his first inputs on the situation is ÒShouldÕve brought wienies,Ó showing his contrast to the serious Bell. After this scene, Wendell is only seen three more times throughout the film. The latter two times, he enters a diner to talk to Sheriff Bell and give him information on the case. After giving Bell important facts, Wendell is surprised in BellÕs lack of excitement in the facts which further shows his inexperience. In the final scene featuring Wendell, Bell starts to show him that he feels that the world has become such a crazy place, that the job Wendell has of being sheriff will a much different one than that of his own.
